Meet the Team

Jane Lees

Role: Instructor

I started having lower back problems in 2010 and spent a small fortune on physios. Eventually one of them advised me to build my core strength and exercise more – easier said than done when you’re in pain! – and, I always hated exercising, gyms were so boring and lonely. Then in February 2015 I signed up for a Nordic Walking UK Taster session, and I haven’t looked back. My back feels great and I no longer worry about hurting it. I’ve met so many people I wouldn’t have otherwise, and made lots of new friends.

In 2017 I decided to take my love of Nordic Walking one step further and trained to be a NWUK Accredited Instructor and set up Nordic Walking Tameside so I can help others experience the benefits of Nordic Walking.

Nordic Walking allows me to really enjoy exercising whenever and wherever it suits, and at whatever pace I fancy on that day. I’ve found Nordic Walking is a great way to relax, improve your mood, and improve your activity/fitness levels in a fun and sociable group (the bacon butties and coffee after walks help as well )

Role: Walk Leader

I started Nordic walking back in 2015 following severe back problems. After not being able to walk or drive for nearly 2 years, and then having to undergo back surgery, I was suffering from back, hip and knee pain, I was overweight and my mental health was suffering badly! I took up Nordic walking not only for the health benefits, but also to meet new people and get different insights into life.

I trained as a Walk Leader in January 2018. I have seen & experienced how much Nordic walking helps people become stronger, increase mobility and fitness, and saw the reward both physically and mentally for all ages and abilities. I now lead our Tuesday Trotters walk every Tuesday morning in Stalybridge.

Mary Fitton

Role: Walk Leader

I’d always been interested in Nordic Walking but couldn’t find any Nordic Walking Groups close to where I live. So, I walked the dog regularly, sometimes went on longer walks at weekends and also enjoyed some leisurely walking holidays.
2017: I had chemotherapy and then found out I had severe osteoporosis
2018: I met Jane and Jo at a “Healthy Living/Self Care” event in Hyde market place. I signed up for more information and the raffle to win free Learn To course. I won the raffle and haven’t looked back since!

Nordic walking is an ideal exercise for my osteoporosis. I regularly walk two times a week, usually the 1.5 hour walks. The beauty of these walks is that they don’t take too much time out of the day – even though I stay for a sociable coffee afterwards. I thought at first, being in my late 60s, I would not be able to keep up with the group, but you can join in the walking whatever your level of fitness. Keep going and your fitness and stamina improves. It’s surprising how much more confidant and faster my walking is now! I’ve met so many nice people. I’ve discovered the countryside around Tameside.

Keeping fit and being sociable. A great combination!

Role: Walk Leader

I never really intended joining the Nordic Walking Tameside group. My wife, Lynne, signed up to a taster and I just went along for a bit of moral support. Jane had a spare set of poles so I joined in. We enjoyed that so we both did the training course and joined the group.
I’d always enjoyed hill walking, usually on my own so it made a nice change to walk with other like minded folks. And who knew there were so many lovely places to walk right on our doorstep.
After a year or so, Jane asked if I’d be interested in being a walk leader. I was doing a lot of the walks so it seemed a good idea to become more involved so I agreed. Once I’d done the training and passed the obstacle of a two day first aid course, I became a qualified walk leader and have never looked back. I lead a regular Saturday morning walk and step in to lead other walks as required.
I can definitely recommend Nordic Walking as a relaxed and sociable way to getting fit.

Role: Walk Leader

I started Nordic walking in November 2019 when I was going through a really tough period of my life. I wanted to do some regular exercise but wanted to do it outside, I knew being outside always made me feel better. I found Nordic Walking Tameside and I have never looked back. I became a walk leader with them because I believe in the power of exercise whilst being outdoors and I wanted to share that. No matter what your fitness level, Nordic Walking Tameside has a class to suit everyone and you will certainly have fun whilst exercising. Nordic walking is a very sociable way of getting fit.

Chris Hulme

Role: Walk Leader

I have enjoyed walking all my life being introduced to the great outdoors at an early age. However, as I got older my knees and back began to suffer and I couldn’t get out and do very much without being in pain. I saw an advert for Nordic Walking back in 2019 explaining it’s health benefits and decided to give it a go and enrol on a taster session. The rest as they say is history. The support from the leaders and the group is fantastic. Some walks are easier paced than others, some walks are longer so there is something suitable for everyone. Last year I trained as a walk leader and having completed the course and first aid training I now lead Friday walks & fill in on an ad hoc basis on other days.
Nordic Walking is a great way of exercising in a sociable, relaxed atmosphere with the added benefit of doing it all in the fresh air. As always taking that very first step can be the hardest but is so worth while.

One of the best things I have done

I started Nordic Walking with Jane over 12 months ago. It was one of the best things I have done. Fitness, fresh air, fun and a great group of people. It has kept me sane during lockdown . Suggest you give it a try

Walk on the Wild Side with Tameside

Why walk on The Wild Side when you can walk on the Tame Side with Jane and the Nordic gang? Technical aspects are covered well and the walks are very enjoyable!

Would recommend it

Jane is so nice, and easy to get on with  other people we have met.

You don’t actually feel like you are working out

I have just completed the learn to Nordic walk course and graduated today. I was made to feel very welcome and a part of the group on my first groups walk this morning. Jane the instructor is very knowledgeable and helpful. As Nordic walking is full body working it is better then just normal walking. Due to the interaction of the group you don’t actually feel like you are working out. I took part in one of the free taster session and really enjoyed. I would recommend giving it go, it is a great family to be part of.

Julie, 55

Perfect way to get outside

Really enjoyed my taster walk and now looking forward to undertaking the beginners course. Can really see how Nordic walking could offer me an alternative to trail running after long term injury and is the perfect way to get outside in nature to work out whilst being kinder to my body

Hannah, 46

I have been walking with Jane and her merry gang for over a year now

It has become at least a weekly activity for me and I have made many new friends, as well as having weekends away and a holiday planned with them! No matter what your fitness level is you will be made most welcome and will fit in with the group, as Jane has a way of tailoring the walks to meet everybody’s needs. I would recommend this walking group not just for the fitness side but also the fun side and the socialising. Oh …….and some lovely countryside too!

Anita, 61
